At the time Anne made the statement in the box on the right, she was the executive director of the Olathe Medical Center Foundation, and that institution was a participant in our firm's Planned Giving Consortium. The consortium concept developed after The NJSG wrote a proposal to a foundation to fund a planned giving position at a large nonprofit institution. Many of the larger nonprofits have planned giving officers full time while the small and middle-sized agencies do not. When questioning why they didn't employ such professionals, it became apparent they had bought into one or more of the three barriers that prevents them from offering planned gift options to their constituents.

Myth 1: We have to wait decades for a return on our planned giving investment, until somebody dies.
Reality: If done as it should be-that is, as a service to donors and as a relationship-building process-the nonprofit realizes immediate returns in annual gifts! The planned gift realization comes later, almost as a bonus.

Myth 2: We need an expensive, lawyer-like character who knows all the tax angles to do this.
Reality: Many lawyers don't know all the tax aspects. While there are some very knowledgeable and successful tax attorneys who are also planned giving officers,
they are fundraisers first. Prospects still must reach the point of saying yes to your organization before the "how" of the gift is examined and determined. When you reach the point of needing the "how," it is then that an expert is needed to work with donors and their advisors.

Myth 3: The development staff either doesn't have the time available to do planned giving or feels unqualified to attempt it.
Reality: This is where the Planned Giving Consortium service comes in-our company does your planned giving program for you. We are not selling advice and imprintable brochures. We have a proven plan and system that the nonprofit can utilize based on what it needs. And, perhaps most attractive, because it is a system that can be customized, it can be done inexpensively. If your organization is ready for planned giving or if you would just like to explore the possibilities, give us a call.
